Homestead student places first in Mandarin speech contest

Alyssa Chinese speech pic.jpg
Congratulations to Alyssa Liang for first place in the 41st Mandarin Speech Contest recently held at Lowell High School in San Francisco. More than 600 contestants from kindergarten through college participated in the event. The purpose of the speech is to “ celebrate the achievements of students of all educational levels in their learning of Chinese language and culture.” Alyssa was the first place winner in the high school division III-B-3.

HHS honors 3 Poster Kids

Each year the administrative team at each of the five FUHSD high schools selects one boy and one girl from their senior class that personify that ‘best of the best’ of the senior class and who exemplify excellence, dedication, and  generosity.  This selection also extends to the Student Board Representative to the FUHSD Board of Trustees.  A poster is made of each of these eleven Poster Kids and these posters are displayed in the FUHSD District Office and at the high school sites and serve as an excellent reminder to our community of the students that FUHSD is blessed to educate. This year's HHS honorees are seniors Nathan Mijares, Erika Yasuda and Cyrus Miremadi.

All Night Party is a rite of passage for Homestead's graduating seniors. It is a safe alternative to open graduation events - our students are transported by bus to an undisclosed location where they enjoy a closed, fun-filled night that includes games, prizes, singing, dancing and more. It's their final chance to hang out together as proud Homestead Mustangs. All Night Party was started many years ago (too many to count) and is a gift to seniors in celebration of their high school years.
In order for this to happen, however, we need parent volunteers... especially one or two Class of 2017 parents to helm the ship!
As ANP CHAIR (or Co-Chairs), you are mainly responsible for managing the team leaders and committees. You will also act as our Liaison with the School, the ANP event facility, and the HHS graduation committee. We need YOU to keep us all on track! If you can take on this role, please let PTSA  know by July 1, 2016.

It takes organization and effort by a large team of parents who are willing to do a host of tasks: theme brainstorming, party planning, helping raise funds necessary to offset expenses that the student bids do not cover, setup, clean-up and actually staffing the different areas the night of the party.
Next June, we'll need dozens of parents the night of the event but first we need to focus on planning and fundraising beginning this summer and carrying through until Spring 2017. Whether your son or daughter is a Freshman, Sophomore or Junior, the All Night Party committee needs you NOW. Your involvement contributes to the support of next year's Senior class and guarantees the continuation of this tradition for future seniors.
Help us make the next ANP just as successful as the many that have come before. If you are interested in learning more about the All Night Party Chair position, please contact Shirley Frantz, PTSA President, at frantzshirley@gmail.com.

We need your photos of our 2016 Graduating Class.  New photos, old photos, happy photos, funny photos.....you choose.  Upload to  https://hhsanp2016.shutterfly.com/. You will need to request access and will get an email back with access info.  Single person pictures are great but also upload pictures that have your Senior plus many other Seniors and label the photos with the names of the students that are pictured. We will use the photos for a video we will show on the bus to the All Night Party venue and at the end of the night at the after party at HHS.    If you have any questions, email Trish Guerrieri at trish@informart.com

This coming August we will welcome Japanese students from Iizuka to our area, including high school students.  These students are going to experience school days in Sunnyvale and Cupertino on August 22-24.  Middle school visitors will attend school at Sunnyvale Middle School during their stay. Homestead will be hosting at least three. If you are interested in welcoming a student to stay at your home during their time here, please see the attached document for details with the link for the host family application.

The Homestead High School graduation ceremony will take place on Thursday, June 2nd at 3 pm. Information about parking, seating, etc. is attached.

All Juniors and Seniors attending Community College: EOP is designed to improve access and retention of historically low-income and educationally disadvantaged students on CSU and community college campuses. EOP students have the potential and demonstrated motivation to perform satisfactorily but they have not been able to realize their potential because of their economic or educational background. The program provides admission and academic assistance to EOP-eligible undergraduate students. In many cases, the program offers financial assistance to eligible students. Campuses tailor their programs to accommodate the needs of their student population.

Fremont Union High School District – home to Cupertino, Fremont, Homestead, Lynbrook, and Monta Vista High Schools – closely monitors student enrollment projections in order to best prepare for facilities, staffing, and course offerings for FUHSD students.  Current projections indicate that while enrollment at most of the high schools is increasing, at Lynbrook High School student enrollment continues to decline.  More information about this matter can be found at http://www.fuhsd.org/AttendanceAreaInfo.
FUHSD Superintendent Polly Bove has created a Superintendent's ad hoc Citizens Advisory Committee on enrollment.  The purpose of this committee is to study the enrollment needs of FUHSD and all its aspects, and to provide a report and findings in order for the FUHSD Board of Trustees to make decisions for implementation in the 2017-2018 school year.  This committee will meet independently from the Board of Trustees and have an independent facilitator.  For additional information about the Citizens Advisory Committee, and to download an application, please visit http://www.fuhsd.org/CitizensAdvisoryCommittee
