Attention all bikers entering campus from the student parking lot side. Due to construction, you will no longer be able to access the bike racks from the access road. You need to enter campus through the student parking lot entrance at Homestead and Kennewick. Ride directly back to the sidewalk adjacent to the tennis courts and walk your bikes from there to the bike rack. We will be working to make a more permanent path, but in the mean time, please pay attention to staff and signs.

Every year each of the FUHSD's school's IDC Representatives are tasked with giving a report to the district's Board of Trustees about their school's activities. This year, Homestead's IDC Representatives have produced a documentary showcasing students, staff members, and groups. The documentary is to show others what it's really like to be a part of Homestead and highlight not only its excellence as a school, but the environment it provides to facilitate students' overall growth. The documentary, titled, "The Life of a Mustang," will premiere on Friday, May 12, at 7:00 P.M. in the Homestead Cafeteria.

In recognition of the critical role that communication, transparency and accessibility play in the relationship between the Fremont Union High School District (FUHSD) Board of Trustees and the parents, families and community members that reside in FUHSD, the Board will be piloting an Office Hours program over the course of the next year, beginning May 2017. It is our belief that regular, open-door meetings and dialogue between the Board and members of the community will help continue to strengthen positive communication and trust between the District and the students, families and residents that it serves.

You are invited to attend our first Board Office Hours session on Tuesday, May 9 at Lynbrook High School from 6 to 7:30 p.m. This new program will provide community members with the opportunity to find out more about the work of the Board and District, ask questions and provide valuable feedback. Trustees Jeff Moe and Roy Rocklin will be in attendance at this first Board Office Hours session. Please view the attached flyer for more details, or visit www.fuhsd.org/boardofficehours.

This week, the California Department of Education (CDE) released a new accountability system and corresponding website designed to help parents and communities access important information about K-12 districts and schools across the state and how well they are serving their students. This system, known as the California School Dashboard, is a significant departure from the Academic Performance Index. We understand there will likely be many questions from our families and community members about the new system, which moves away from a single number/ranking to a system aligned to multiple measures, including graduation and suspension rates, indicators of college and career readiness, English Learner progress and test scores.

Please read the attached letter for more information on the CA Dashboard and directions on accessing the CDE¹s website on the CA Dashboard.

The Alameda County Office of Education has also put on a wonderful video that can be viewed at https://vimeo.com/207874984, which explains the Dashboard in more detail.

Thank you for your continued support of our schools as we work to ensure that every student has the strongest foundation for future success.

IS YOUR STUDENT ADDICTED TO VIDEO GAMES…SOCIAL MEDIA…THE INTERNET? Please join Homestead High School & the PTSA in a special showing of SCREENAGERS – Growing Up In The Digital Age, a documentary exploring the impact of mobile devices on teens’ lives. Screenagers probes the impacts smartphones and other mobile devices are having on teenagers and their social, emotional and psychological lives and offers parents and teens practical solutions that can work.

Hi Mustangs,

As part of our effort to improve traffic safety coming to and from school, we are going to be gathering some data on Monday from the students who walk to school or bike to school. In conjunction with the Safe Routes to School program with the City of Cupertino, we will be creating bike and walk maps to chart the most popular routes for bikers and walkers so the we can examine any safety issues that might arise.

This will be an unobtrusive process and will not take any class time. We will have tables set up at the entrances to campus and by the bike racks before school for students to chart their journeys, and we will have tables set up at lunch in the quad for students who may have been missed in the morning.

This is just one of our ongoing steps to address traffic safety, and if are interested in helping with this project, please let me know. We will be conducting a car traffic audit in the coming weeks and can use some more volunteers.

Safely Yours,

Steven Puccinelli

I thought it might be helpful for all of you to get to know our administrators who are out there helping with the traffic flow and to hear directly from them about what we are trying to accomplish. Our first message is from Brian Dong, our Activities Assistant Principal. This is Mr. Dong’s fourth year at Homestead; his first three years he was the Dean who oversaw students with the last name of Lib through Z and this is his first year as an Assistant Principal. Before coming to Homestead, Mr. Dong taught math at Monta Vista and was a graduate of MV as well as UC Davis. Mr. Dong grew up here and still lives nearby with his wife and baby girl. He loves golfing and eating at McDonald’s. ~Mr. Giglio

“Doing morning traffic is a fun way for me to start my day.  It’s great to welcome our students as they come onto campus, and sometimes to help them wake up!  Our biggest traffic issues continue to be in the horseshoe.  Not pulling as far forward as possible really backs up the traffic along Homestead Road.  You might think that stopping quickly to do a quick drop off won’t impact others behind you but believe me it does!  It causes a chain reaction where other parents just tell their students to get out of the car since they are stopped behind you.  Be patient, move forward, and exit in the same lane that you came into. Please be mindful of the administrators directing you and pull forward as far as you can.

Please read the updated information below from the City of Sunnyvale's Stephen Azzi regarding the Mary Avenue road construction:

The sidewalk concrete work on Mary Ave by Homestead takes into consideration the need to maintain pedestrian access and bike access. Work is performed on one side a time. Currently we are working on the NB Mary side. Certain sidewalk segments are closed to perform removal and replacement.  Sidewalk closure signs are placed at the subject locations and at nearby intersections to detour pedestrians to the other side of Mary without construction activity.  Generally it takes 5 working days to remove and replace sidewalk segments.

Existing bike lanes nearby sidewalk replacement sites are closed as part of needed lane closures to perform the work.  Required bike closure signs and "Share The Road" signs are placed in accordance to City's requirements for bike lane closures. Once daytime construction work is completed by end of shift, traffic lane/bike lane closures are removed and bike lanes are reopened.

This August we will welcome Japanese students from Iizuka to our area, including high school students.  These students are going to experience school days in Sunnyvale and Cupertino on August 22-24.  Middle school visitors will attend school at Sunnyvale Middle School during their stay. Homestead will be hosting at least three. If you are interested in welcoming a student to stay at your home during their time here, please see the attached document for details with the link for the host family application.
