August 2017 -- Principal's Message

Dear Homestead,

August is upon us, which means we will be welcoming new students and parents as well as staff members to our Homestead family.  Homestead continues to be the largest high school in our district with a current enrollment (one that is still in flux as students move in and out of our district daily) that is just under 2500 total students.  This is the first year that we have all four classes be over 600 students each -- Seniors have 606 students, Juniors are 609, Sophomores with 619 and Freshmen topping the list with 634 students.  While this may seem high, it is right on track with our enrollment projections and is part of the reason we have been undergoing construction and have more construction planned to expand the size and scope of our classrooms over the next several years.

We are off to a great start as well having just completed the 9th grade student and parent orientations on August 2nd.  Our Class of 2021 showed up in force and showed great spirit during HOP and POP, and we are looking forward to seeing all our students again during Round Up Registration on August 7th and 8th, and then officially on the first day of school (August 14th).  Our staff returns on August 9th for three days of Staff Development and Classroom Preparation.

In order to say hello to our Class of 2021, we did have to say goodbye to the Class of 2017 and wish them success on their various journeys after Homestead.  We have also bid farewell to several staff members who have moved on to other opportunities.  Leaving our staff over the summer were the following:  Scott Wilson, Stephanie Crosby, Brooke Chan, Judy Gonzalez, Kim Hoy, Kayla Tran, Julia Rogers, Stephanie Palomo, Jenny Giatis, Noelle Mason-Wood, David Amaya, Thane Ferguson, Erik Shimshock, and Clara Lin.  While it is very hard to say goodbye, we do want to thank those individuals listed above for their service and dedication to our Homestead students during their time here as well as wish them the best as they pursue their retirements, moves, and new opportunities.

We would also like to welcome our newest staff members whom you will get a chance to meet at our Back to School Night on September 13th:

Keiley Alvaro -- Special Education Para-Professional

Anthony Byers – Special Education

Katie Heaney – Math

Kirk Hinton – English

As I mentioned in last month’s Principal’s Message, our new teachers in some cases had already met with the other members of their course-alike teams during the summer in order to get aligned with our curriculum and procedures.  These new staff members will also be participating in district sponsored training and orientation prior to the three days of Staff Development before school starts for the students.

If you were at our Parent Orientation Program (P.O.P.), you would have heard me describe our school as a triangle whose three points are our Students, Staff and Parents -- as study after study has shown that schools where parents are genuinely involved and actively participate are more successful and their students are more successful.  In the spirit of this information, we have a variety of ways in which parents can get involved such as through our Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), the Fremont Union High School Foundation, our various Booster programs (Athletics, Football, Music, etc), School Site Council (SSC) to name just a few.  I will also be sending out an email after the start of school looking to recruit parents as volunteer tutors for a program that we are still developing.  If you haven’t already done so, please be sure to sign up for School Loop to receive information from the school, teachers and the district and Infinite Campus, which is your student information portal.  All of these organizations and tools can be found on our website, so please take the time to navigate through it and discover what it has to offer.

Finally, I would like to wish you all a wonderful 2017-2018 school year and look forward to working with you and your students to make Homestead a great place to learn.

Greg Giglio, Principal
